FDDC Reacts against Hillsborough Deputy’s Actions

The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council Remarks on “Intolerable Abuse”

February 14, 2008

TALLAHASSEE -- The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc. (FDDC) spoke out today against the abusive treatment of Brian D. Sterner by a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy. Debra Dowds, executive director of the FDDC, stated that they are appalled by the actions seen on surveillance video, adding that such demeaning and inhumane behavior to any individual cannot be tolerated.

The FDDC advocates respect and inclusion for people with disabilities, stating that individual rights apply to all citizens. The Council recognizes that all people, regardless of disability, illness or label, are human beings and deserve to be treated with dignity and granted the same protections as every other person.

“The treatment of Mr. Sterner is extremely upsetting,” said Dowds. “It is unacceptable to subject any person to such humiliation and potential harm. Persons with disabilities should not be an exception to any rule. It is shocking that even during this day and age we are witnessing such degradation.”

In order to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities, the FDDC states that we must address discriminatory behavior of this nature and work to eliminate it though a zero-tolerance policy. People with disabilities have the right to exert control over their lives and fully contribute as equal and active members of society. Integration and inclusion involves showing respect to all citizens.

“Our society must take responsibility to ensure that people with disabilities are given the same value as every member of society,” said Dowds. “The public response we have received expressing outrage over Mr. Sterner’s treatment demonstrates to us that Floridians will not tolerate this kind of behavior.”
